Our specialty is providing our expertise with respect to documents written in CJK Chinese, Japanese, Korean languages and electronically stored information composed in CJK languages in crossborder largescale litigation matters.At least one Project Engineering Coordinator PEC assigned to assist our clients in eDiscovery matters involving the Japanese language, must be able to read, speak and write Japanese. The PEC must be able to read Japanese language documents and cross check that our technologies is accurately providing the results in document production, or properly withholding privileged documents in response to discovery requests for documents, as well as segregating privileged and workproduct documents from release to the opposing litigating party.Many documents from Japanese document custodians are formed in nonWestern standard. That is, the documents have unique encoding or the file itself needs to be opened by a special software. For example, Ichitaro is a common Japanese word software that sometimes cannot be processed by LAW or NUIX eDiscovery software programs.A PEC who knows the exception nature of the document can double check the processed data from LAW or NUIX and procced with a special conversion. Documents which are not processed through a special conversion appear to be an exception or the words are garbled. The PEC needs to quickly identify the uniqueness of each custodians set of documents. These variations in document storage and formatting make it difficult, but a PEC still needs to provide prompt results of requested searches and data processing. Not all Japanese clients are familiar with eDiscovery procedures. Accordingly, a PEC must ascertain what kinds of document storage and retention software they are using so that we can determine the types of documents are in the collection. Moreover, a PEC with experience in CrossBorder litigation involving Japanese language documents can take appropriate action when the PEC sees unusual extensions or a large number of documents that are treated as exceptions in comparison to previous projects involving Japanese language documents, by investigating if there are any special file types or encryptions.
