What started off with a teacher hoping to get a few teachers and students to “shave their lid for a kid” resulted in 45 teachers and students and community members raising over $19,000 for Kids Cancer Care.

What started off with a teacher from Samuel W. Shaw School hoping to get a few teachers and students to “shave their lid for a kid” resulted in 45 teachers and students and a couple of community members raising over $19,000 for Kids Cancer Care.

When teacher Phill Noel first started organizing the event he was thinking it would be amazing to get of team of about 15 involved in the event. Within a couple of days of sharing his idea to the school, more than 20 students had signed up with five teachers participating. The number of participants continued to grow up until just two days prior to the event. As a group, they set an ambitious goal of raising $20,000. Students raised money through a school dance, donations from family and friends, social media campaigns and the generosity of fellow students and teachers. As of Feb. 24, the amount of donations collected was over $19,000.

All of the participants shaved their heads on Feb. 15, which is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. The event was kicked off with an assembly which included a spokes-kid from Kids Cancer Care, Colette Karlee, who shared her survivor story. As well there were messages from Premier Notley, MLA Richard Gotfried and MLA Graham Sucha.

All the hair that was over 12 inches long was also donated to Angel Hair for Kids, a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.

Thank you to the teachers, students and community members for giving the opportunity for Kids Cancer Care to help those students that need it the most
