Board Chair Joy Bowen-Eyre speaks at the new school announcement at Forest Lawn High School with Minister Ceci and students.

On Tuesday, March 21 the Government of Alberta announced three new schools and one major modernization for the Calgary Board of Education:

  • Coventry Hills/Country Hills Village (elementary K-4)
  • Cranston (elementary K-4)
  • Evergreen (elementary K-4)
  • Forest Lawn High School modernization

“On behalf of our students, we thank the Government of Alberta for today’s announcement. New schools and major modernizations of aging facilities help us continue to offer quality learning opportunities for our students closer to where they live,” said Joy Bowen-Eyre, Chair of the CBE Board of Trustees.

These projects were the top four priorities in the Three-Year School Capital Plan 2017-2020, submitted to Government in April 2016.

“A multi-year planning approach will bring stability and predictability as our system continues to grow to meet the needs of our students and their families,” said Bowen-Eyre.

This school year the CBE opened 15 new schools and two replacement facilities for Christine Meikle and Elbow Park schools; as well, it completed modernizations at Bowness and Jack James high schools to upgrade career and technology (CT) learning spaces for students. A third modernization was also completed at the former Harold W. Riley School site that is now the home of the new Aboriginal Learning Centre.

There are also five additional new school projects underway to open for students later this year and in 2018.

At the March 14, 2017 public board meeting, the Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees approved the new Three-Year School Capital Plan 2018-2021 requesting 20 new schools and 11 major modernizations from the Provincial Government. This plan will be submitted to the Province by April 1, 2017.
