Over 300 students, staff and community members participated in the second annual “Ride of the Chief’s” Bike-A-Thon

Over 300 students, staff and community members participated in the second annual “Ride of the Chief’s” (ROTC2K17) hosted by John G. Diefenbaker High School.
The 24 hour Bike-A-Thon began at 8 a.m. on Apr. 21 and ended at 8 a.m. on Apr. 22. Over the 24 hours, while the spinning was taking place, the school hosted numerous activities including entertainment, yoga classes, games, food vendors and a Much Music Video dance.
The 300 participants made up 32 teams of approximately ten people per team with members taking shifts of half an hour to one hour on the bikes. However, one group had a JGDHS teacher who rode for 24 hours straight. His team name was the One Man Revolution.
Special thanks goes out to Queen Elizabeth High School for donating your spin bikes to ROTC2K17 so that more teams could be involved this year.
Donna Fraser, JGDHS teacher advisor for the event, said seeing the students participate in the fundraiser together is touching. "We're all just really proud and hopeful for the future," she said. "You see these really positive young people doing something to build community and make the world a better place, which is just fantastic."
The event was a huge success raising $27,500, surpassing their goal of $25,000, for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. The 2016 Ride of the Chiefs raised $15,000 so the amount raised this year was impressive.
