Chair Joy Bowen-Eyre presents the award to Akeem Haynes

The CBE Legacy Award celebrates public education in Calgary and the individuals who have contributed to our communities. In every corner of the city, across the country and beyond, our alumni have made a lasting impact.

Akeem Haynes was presented with the Legacy Award on June 13, 2017.

Akeem is a world-class sprinter and the winner of a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Akeem graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 2010.

“Students like Akeem inspire all of us to work hard and achieve our goals – both individually and as part of our larger community. We’re very proud to present the fourth CBE Legacy Award to Akeem Haynes,” said Joy Bowen-Eyre, chair, Calgary Board of Education.

An author and a motivational speaker, Akeem is known as a leader and a role model in the athletic community. Akeem was nominated by one of his former teachers. His nominator shared this with us:

“Akeem is the one of the finest student-athletes that I have had the opportunity to teach in my career. He has a tremendous number of positive attributes but I think that his most notable was his leadership and citizenship within our school. He was a friend to virtually every student in the building. He is extremely kind and personable and has a fantastic good nature, which makes his leadership so effective.

I am particularly proud of Akeem who, as a high school student, overcame many barriers in his path due to his family's socio-economic background. He rose above those challenges to write and publish a self-help book, "Life, Love and Legacy" and his second book, "Fear, Faith and Fruition" is awaiting publication in January 2017. Akeem has a very strong work ethic and has excellent interpersonal skills. He is courteous, respectful of others and holds a positive outlook towards life. In short, Akeem lives the CBE Results that we work towards for all our students.”

Akeem earned a scholarship to the University of Alabama where he was an NCAA champion as well as an Academic All-American.

Joy Bowen-Eyre met with Akeem in May to present him with the award in person.
