The Grade 1 and 2 students at Douglas Harkness School participated in a Reading Rally in December with the support of Calgary Reads. All Grade 1 and 2 children in the school had the opportunity to engage in this special event to celebrate literacy and their love of reading.
Students gathered in the gym and were partnered with volunteers from our community as well as from Pembina Pipeline Corporation. Volunteers read a variety of books to the children and shared their joy of reading. Students were entertained by a Reader’s Theatre put on by their teachers which prompted many giggles and lots of applause!
A highlight of the afternoon was when our Calgary Board of Education Trustee, Marilyn Dennis read aloud the story I Met an Elk in Edson Once by Dave Kelly. Students gathered close and Trustee Dennis shared some of her own reading experiences and the positive impact reading has made on her life. Other special guests included Calgary Police Service Constable Scott Hoard, Area 4 System Principal, Zoe Serediuk and Douglas Harkness School volunteers.
The Reading Rally came to a close and students were each gifted a special bag filled with brand new books and other activities to help promote literacy. Students returned to their classrooms with a renewed energy that ignited their joy of reading and strengthened our sense of community! “I loved it, all of it!” shared an enthusiastic Grade 1 student.
