On January 17th students from Piitoayis Family School had the amazing opportunity to meet with members of Canada’s 2018 Winter Olympic Women’s Hockey Team before they left for South Korea.
Not only did students get to watch the women in action, but they had the chance to meet some of the players in person, specifically Brigette Lacquette, defense from Cody First Nation of Saskatchewan. Students were excited to see this event covered on the evening news.
Bridgette Lacquette is a mentor to the students at Piitoayis Family School through her volunteer work with the Classroom Champions Circle Program. Students have been learning about goal setting, teamwork and perseverance with the help of videos created by Brigette and the Classroom Champions. The children were overjoyed to finally meet Brigette in person. She is a role model for our students and her life is a message to all students, and Indigenous students in particular, that they too are capable of high level achievement.
In addition to meeting our Classroom Champion, the Piitoayis Family School drum group had the opportunity to honor not only Bridgette, but also Melody Daoust, Marie-Philip Poulin and Bailey Bram. The drummers honored these women with an honor song and gift. We wished them and the rest of Team Canada good luck in South Korea and cheered them on throughout the games.
