​Actor and former NFL player Terry Crews spoke to 1,800 students at Nelson Mandela High School on Nov. 20. He talked about what it means to be a man, how young people can transform gender roles and stereotypes and how important it is for people to take responsibility for their own actions.

Crews candidly shared his own story about growing up with an alcoholic father, struggling with his own identity as a young adult, and changing his views about women. He emphasized the importance of treating everyone equally and with respect regardless of gender. Crews told students to embrace their own identities and encouraged them to speak out against masculine behavior that degrades and dismisses women.

Crews was in Calgary as the keynote speaker at the 8th annual YWHISPER Fundraising Gala for the YWCA.
