一切始于去年春天，来自汤姆·贝恩斯学校的三名九年级学生格雷格、布兰登和施仁参加了在卡尔加里举行的世界学者杯比赛，这是一个鼓励未来学者和领导者全球社区的国际比赛。世界学者杯要求参赛者参加四个主要类别的比赛：辩论、学者碗（分析问题）、合作写作和学者挑战（多项选择）。主题是“一个纷繁的世界”，需要准备的学科包括历史、社会学、科学、艺术、音乐、文学和人类学。

格雷格、布兰登和施仁以胜利的奖杯填满了一个展柜，他们很高兴地得知自己获得了吉隆坡的全球赛资格。去年6月，这三人代表加拿大跨越了地球，需要一个额外的行李箱来带回所有的奖牌和奖杯。接下来，他们又获得了耶鲁大学的锦标赛资格。

格雷格、布兰登和施仁于11月中旬前往耶鲁大学。这是一生中难得的经历。来自58个国家的将近2300名学者聚集在纽黑文。汤姆·贝恩斯学校委员会慷慨赞助了我们的选手，并在国际展馆内设立了一个加拿大展位。比赛令人振奋，我们的团队受到了耶鲁大学Woolsey天花板和教室的启发。

​It all began last Spring, when Greg, Brendon, and ShiRen, current Grade 9 students from Tom Baines School, competed in the World Scholar’s Cup in Calgary, an international competition inspiring a global community of future scholars and leaders. World Scholar’s Cup required participants to compete in four major categories: Debate, Scholar’s Bowl (analytic questions), Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Challenge (multiple choice). The theme was “An Entangled World” and the subject areas to prepare for included history, social studies, science, art, music, literature and anthropology.

Greg, Brendon and ShiRen filled a trophy case with their victories and were excited to learn that they qualified for the Global Rounds in Kuala Lumpur. Travelling across the globe last June, the team of three represented Canada and required an extra suitcase to bring back all of their medals and trophies. Next the team qualified for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University.

Greg, Brendon and ShiRen travelled to Yale University in mid November. It was an experience of a lifetime. Nearly 2,300 scholars from 58 countries came together in New Haven. Tom Baines’ School Council generously sponsored our competitors and they set up a Canadian booth within the International Pavilion. The competition was invigorating and our team was inspired by the Woolsey ceiling and the classrooms of Yale.

Winning nine medals in various subject areas, Greg, ShiRen, and Brendon proudly represented both the CBE and Tom Baines School at the Tournament of Champions. We are very proud of you and are excited for this year’s World Scholar’s Cup.
