Chosen from designs from all over Alberta, the Skills Canada Alberta team selected Brooklyn Fee, a Grade 11 Graphic Design student from Ernest Manning High School, as the top design for their 2020 Cardboard Boat Race medals.
Cardboard Boat Race
Chosen from designs from all over Alberta, the Skills Canada Alberta team selected Brooklyn Fee, a Grade 11 graphic design student from Ernest Manning High School, as the top design for their 2020 Cardboard Boat Race medals. The selection committee stated that they loved the design so much, they made the design into a tee shirt as well.
Within her design process, Brooklyn was inspired by the Skills movement, which she had previously completed. She wanted to celebrate the year 2020, taking inspiration from the symmetry of the “2020” numbers. Wanting to create movement and incorporate the texture of water and cardboard into the background.
“Skills Canada Alberta will be a model of excellence in the promotion of skilled trade and technology careers to youth in our province and in our country.”
The Cardboard Boat Race is open to junior and senior high school students across Alberta. Working in teams they are challenged to design and construct a boat with supplied materials. “Not only does their ‘boat’ need to be quick, but it must be capable of carrying passengers as well.” This challenge is about problem-solving, design, principles of structure and to have fun.
Brooklyn is Ernest Manning’s Graphic Design Skills champion, where she competed at the 2019 Provincial Skills Competition finishing sixth overall. She continues to train and refine her skills with her teacher-coaches Ms. Flaherty and Mr. McDermott. Reaching the provincial podium in spring and winning her own medal is the goal.
