Schools will be in Scenario 1 on Sept. 1

Christopher Usih

Dear Parents/Guardians

We have been working hard throughout the summer to prepare for the 2020-21 school year. There have been many meetings with Alberta Education, Alberta Health, other school boards and across our organization to develop guidelines for the CBE re-entry plan.

On July 21, the provincial government announced all Alberta school boards will return to in-person classes in September. Today, the CBE posted its Scenario 1 re-entry plan for schools. This plan includes information on measures that will be in place in schools to help protect the health of our students and staff. There are also frequently asked questions and numerous government and CBE resources.

The CBE's 2020-21 re-entry plan is subject to change as more information becomes available from the province. We will continue to update our website with additional details – including additional FAQs – throughout the summer and as the situation evolves throughout the school year. Principals will provide additional school-specific information in late August.

A hub online learning approach will be offered to students in Grades 1-12 for the 2020-21 school year only. This is a short-term, online learning approach for families who are not comfortable returning to in-person classes. The hub online approach is a combination of online instruction and independent work and requires a significant commitment from students and parents. It will not offer the same opportunities or supports as in-person learning.

To be successful, this type of learning requires committed parent involvement and assistance. Unlike emergency at-home learning that took place in the spring of 2020, hub online learning requires students to participate full time in their learning and to meet the outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study. Visit our website for information on the hub learning approach. Details about the registration process will be provided later in August. Once a student is registered there will be one transition point during the school year (February 1, 2021) for students to return to in-person learning. Learning hubs may include groups of students from individual schools, or from multiple schools.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we continue to update information on the ways were are working to keep our students and staff safe when we return to school this fall.

We will continue to provide you with ongoing updates as details on re-entry are confirmed. Please visit the COVID-19 page on our website for more information.

Take care,

Christopher Usih
