John G. Diefenbaker

On Dec. 10, Social Studies staff and students at John G. Diefenbaker High School presented a Virtual Human Rights Gallery to acknowledge International Human Rights Day and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In the past, to commemorate the occasion, students would set up exhibits and displays in a common area of the school. As this was not possible this year, a virtual gallery was created so that students could have the opportunity to share their knowledge and understanding of Human Rights with their classmates. The gallery was a great success, as many classes visited on-line, engaged and discussed the important topic of human rights. In addition, nearly 100 students attended a live virtual lecture on Human Rights by University of Calgary political scientist Mark Machacek, with lively and thought provoking questions and discussion following the talk.

Virtual Human Rights Day at John G. Diefenbaker was an exemplary demonstration of the ability of staff to be creative and flexible, and of students being able to engage and thrive in an online environment.
