As the CBE prepares for the 2021-2022 school year ahead, we want to update you about the online learning choice that will be available.
Dear parents/guardians,
As the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) prepares for the 2021-22 school year ahead, we want to update you about the online learning choice that will be available.
Hub online learning was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling students to learn online full-time while remaining connected to their community school. It was a temporary option for the 2020-21 school year.
For next year and beyond, we will offer the choice of full-time online learning for Grade 1 to 12 students through a centralized online school called CBe-learn. Hub online learning will no longer be available.
CBe-learn has been part of CBE for nearly 20 years, providing an education for families who prefer this choice for a variety of reasons. While most families chose Hub online learning in 2020-21 for reasons related to the pandemic, many students discovered they enjoyed and found success with online learning. CBe-learn delivers this online learning model on an ongoing basis for Grade 1 to 12 students.
CBe-learn operates as a single school within the CBE, with its own teachers and students who attend online from across the city. For more information visit the CBe-learn school website.
To help CBE prepare for next year, please complete a short survey about whether you are planning to transfer your student to CBe-learn for the 2021-22 school year. The survey is about your current intention only. It does not determine where your child will attend school; however, your responses are very helpful.
Please complete the survey by March 25, 2021, at 4 p.m. through this link.
Hub students, as well as students learning in-person at school, will automatically be enrolled for in-person learning next year (2021-22) at their school. If they are currently in the highest grade offered at their school, they will be enrolled for in-person learning at their next designated or transfer school, according to our standard practices.
If your student is interested in online learning for next year, you will need to complete a transfer request next month. CBe-learn transfer forms will be available in early April and are due by April 23. Watch for more information to come.
The only students who will be automatically enrolled in CBe-learn next year are those who are already currently attending CBe-learn online full time as their community school.
Grades | CBe-learn provides online learning for students in Grades 1 to 12. |
Commitment | CBe-learn requires a full school year commitment, and is not designed to allow for transitions to in-person learning mid-year. |
Courses | CBe-learn covers the full English Alberta Education Programs of Study. It offers courses required for high school completion, including Core and Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses. |
Courses | CBe-learn does NOT offer Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Special Education classes, or alternative programs including French Immersion, Spanish Bilingual and Arts-Centered Learning. |
Full-time or | For Grades 1 to 9, CBe-learn is full-time only. For Grades 10 to 12, CBe-learn prioritizes acceptance of full-time students. High school students attending their community school in-person may also be accepted for individual online courses through CBe-learn, if space and resources are available. This is arranged through the community school. |
Centralized | Full time CBe-learn students are connected to CBe-learn only, rather than a community school. Students access learning resources and supports through CBe-learn. |
