Celebrating a leader shaped by culture, community and connection this Asian Heritage Month.

When Christine Cheung was named a  Women Making History in Alberta  honoree, it was a complete surprise — she hadn’t even known she was nominated. But for those who know her, the recognition feels inevitable.

A long-time advocate for representation and inclusion, Cheung has spent decades quietly shaping her community — starting with running a bilingual Girl Guide group in Calgary’s Chinatown while still a university student.

“We didn’t realize it at the time, but we were building cultural bridges,” she reflects. “We brought together kids from China and Chinese Canadians, creating a space where both English and Chinese languages and traditions were celebrated.”

Fast-forward to today: Cheung is in her 13th year as principal of Highwood School, and her work continues to centre on what she’s always believed in — cultural connection, empathy, and empowering families to feel truly seen and heard.

“There are things I do instinctively — how I speak to families, how I respect traditions, even just knowing why some students don’t bring cultural lunches or why a hug might not be welcome. These are things that matter.”

Cheung’s fluency in Cantonese and understanding of Mandarin help her connect with families in their mother tongues — building trust and pride. “Language is tied to identity, history, and belonging,” she says. “As a child, I was embarrassed to speak Chinese. Now I see how that shaped me — and why I’m so committed to ensuring kids today grow up proud of who they are.”

From being one of the key people who collaborated with Senator Vivienne Poy in 2001 to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada, to advocating for inclusive programming, Cheung’s legacy is rooted in empowering others.

“I am proof of the power of language, culture, and identity,” she says. “If we want everyone to feel included, we need to offer the opportunities. We need to help the next generation see themselves as leaders.”
