The results reflect progress toward, and achievement of, the key outcomes identified in the CBE’s 2021-24 Education Plan. The AERR is a comprehensive account of the CBE’s performance in the 2023-24 school year.

In provincial standardized testing, CBE students continue to outperform the province. Specifically, in all eight Diploma Exam measures, CBE students achieved higher results than the province. Measures also improved, improved significantly or were maintained in 12 of 16 Provincial Achievement Test measures.

Significant improvement was also noted in the five-year high school completion rate, increased overall student attendance, and improved levels of achievement in numeracy and reading in report card marks.  Division 1 and 4 students saw improvement in report card achievement in Mathematics and more than 70 per cent of Division 2 CBE students demonstrated a well-developed or mastery levels of understanding on the reading stem.  As well, Division 4 students had higher average English Language Arts marks in 2023-24 as compared to 2022-23, with achievement in English Language Arts increasing for all students, including EAL learners, students who identify as Indigenous, and students with identified special education needs.

The report also highlights areas for growth. Specifically, a focus on student engagement in learning is a priority, as is ongoing work to support student and staff well-being, students’ sense of connectedness and belonging, and accessing timely supports to improve learning outcomes.

"We’re so proud of the dedication, commitment and achievement of CBE staff and students,” said Patricia Bolger, Chair, CBE Board of Trustees. “This report not only highlights success but demonstrates where we need to focus to ensure there is continued improvement and growth.”

"These results are a reflection of the collective effort of our students, families, teachers, and staff across the system,” said Joanne Pitman, Chief Superintendent. “By working together, we continue to strengthen connections and create environments where every student feels supported to succeed. As we look to the future, we remain committed to continuous improvement and addressing areas for growth with the same shared focus and dedication."
