Sophie Ducharme, École Banff Trail School, recognized as a 2024 recipient of the Prix d’excellence en immersion française. Translated into Chinese: Sophie Ducharme,
Sophie
Sophie Ducharme, a teacher and learning leader at Banff Trail School, has been named a recipient of the prestigious “Excellence en immersion française” award. The award, presented by Association canadienne des professionnels de l'immersion (ACPI), recognizes excellence in immersive teaching across Canada.
Beginning her career as a classroom teacher in 2001, Ducharme has progressed to lead as both a classroom instructor and champion of intensive French at École Banff Trail School. Her role includes helping students from kindergarten to Grade 5 develop their oral language skills as well as conducting workshops with other educators to understand the neurolinguistic approach to learning language skills to better support their students in the classroom.
“Being recognized is truly an honour,” said Ducharme. “Receiving an award of this calibre gives me confidence in my skills as an educator and allows me to reflect on the positive impact of the work — it’s not just about the work I do at my school, but the work that is being done across CBE as a whole.”
Sophie reflected on the importance of teamwork and collaboration to develop programs like intensive French.
“Sometimes as educators we may feel alone in our efforts,” said Ducharme. “But collaboration is key.
“Many of my ideas are a collection of collaborative efforts of others and the trust of administration to try something different. My goal is to make French fun and highlight the aspect of culture, which is key to the French language.”
ACPI is the national advocacy and professional learning organization for French Immersion teachers, admin and support staff across Canada. Every CBE French Immersion teacher, school and system leader holds a membership.
Winners were announced at ACPI’s national conference on Nov. 8 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
