​​​​​​​​​​Calgary's population and student enrolment continue to increase, with more than 4,000 additional students enrolling in CBE schools in the 2024-2025 school year.

On Oct. 29, the Board of Trustees approved the 2025-2026 Modular Classroom Program​, requesting that the provincial government supply 64 additional modular classrooms to address the urgent need for more student spaces. If all units are approved, this would add space for an additional 1,600 students. Modular classrooms are portable, self-contained units that can be added to existing schools to create additional space. While modular classrooms can relieve space pressures, the Board of Trustees has also requested 21 new schools be built over the next three years, with 13 schools urgently needed in year one.

The process of adding modular classrooms is subject to provincial approvals and funding. Requests are assessed based on current and projected enrollment numbers and other criteria.

At this time last year, the CBE requested 68 new modular classrooms and the relocation of an additional 12. Since then, the provincial government has approved 47 of those modular requests, and those 47 classrooms are expected to be in place by the end of the 2024-2025 school year.

Any units approved in this year's request are expected to be constructed and installed for the 2026-2027 school year.
