​​​​​On February 1, 2024, the government of Alberta announced policy direction​ on Preserving Choice for Children and Youth. The premier of Alberta has made it clear that this is a priority for the government.

​​While the CBE was not consulted on this direction, we have provided feedback highlighting challenges and uncertainty around proposed new rules and impacts. While we await this new legislation, we continue to deliver the Alberta curriculum, and we remain confident in the ability of CBE staff to work collaboratively with families to ensure that each child has the opportunity to thrive at school.

​​To be clear, we are committed to ensuring each and every student feels welcomed, cared for, respected and safe while at school, no matter who they are or how they identify. This is consistent with our legal obligations under the provincial Education Act and the Alberta Human Rights Act. CBE values are clear that students come first, learning is our central purpose and public education serves the common good.
