At its regular board meeting on Nov. 28, the Board of Trustees approved the Annual Education Results Report (AERR).

Last year, students showed strong achievement on Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams, matching, or exceeding the provincial results. High school completion rates continued to increase, specifically for students who self-identify as Indigenous.

Each year, the CBE prepares the AERR for Alberta Education, providing a comprehensive account of performance for the previous school year. The AERR shares the story of the collective progress towards the priorities, goals and outcomes of the CBE’s Education Plan.

The 2022-23 school year was shaped by several factors that had an impact on the system, schools, teachers, students, and families. The CBE welcomed an increase in student enrolment with more than 7,000 new students over the course of the year, many of whom were newcomers to Canada. The previous year was also marked by an increase in student complexity, the introduction of new K-6 curriculum and elevated student and staff absenteeism linked to illnesses.

Areas of growth have also been identified. Student voices have underlined the importance of student well-being and engagement. We understand that community connection and the collective well-being of staff is also an important focus area. The CBE introduced the Student Well-Being Framework last spring, which is focused on improving student well-being to ultimately improve student success.

“CBE students and teachers continue to exhibit resilience and determination as evidenced by the results in this report,” said Laura Hack, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “This year we will continue to build on our strengths while focusing on areas for improvement.”

“I am proud to see the results of intentional efforts in all areas of the CBE and the unwavering commitment to support student success,” said Gary Strother, Acting Chief Superintendent. “I look forward to further advancing achievement, equity and well-being for all students in the CBE.”

Another highlight of the 2022-23 school year was the CBE’s ongoing demonstration of strong financial stewardship and maximization of resources in alignment with Education Plan priorities as captured in the audited financial statements.

Detailed results of the 2022-23 school year are available in the Annual Education Results Report.
