As of today, June 15, the Government of Alberta has moved to the final step of its three-step approach to lifting public health measures related to COVID-19.

The Calgary Board of Education has received new guidance from Alberta Education that will inform operations. The CBE is in the process of updating documents to align with the new provincial direction.

The move to Step 3 marks the end of masking on public transit and mandatory isolation for people who test positive for COVID-19. Masking will still be required in Alberta Health Services settings.

Alberta Education had specific direction to school authorities, including the CBE:

  • Reference to the school guidance documents, the School Year Plan or the Alberta Health Daily Checklist is no longer required.
  • Illness outbreaks in schools will be managed based on pre-pandemic practices through Alberta Health Services, with identification of outbreaks based on student absenteeism.
    • In keeping with this direction, the CBE will end its public posting of daily absence reporting by school.
    • The CBE will follow current practices related to reporting and compensating employees who test positive for COVID-19 until June 30, 2022.
  • As of June 30, 2022, school authorities will no longer need to seek ministerial approval to shift to at-home learning.

Alberta Education has also provided notice of changes to provincial assessments.

Diploma exams taken in August 2022 will continue under the current weighting of 10 per cent. Diploma exams will likely return to 30 per cent of a student’s overall mark for the 2022-23 school year and will be offered at four points throughout the school year.

Mandatory Provincial Achievement Tests will continue for Grades 6 and 9. Literacy and numeracy screening assessment in Grades 1 to 3 will be mandatory.
