The Calgary Board of Education recognizes the sacrifices made by Canadians in armed conflicts

November 5-11, 2022 is Veterans’ Week, a time to remember the generations of brave Canadians who have put their lives on the line in the cause of peace and freedom.

During this week, CBE schools will mark the occasion with lessons and events meaningful to their school community. For example, some schools will host local veterans to hear real-life stories of their personal experiences and others with collect items for the veterans’ food bank.

Tuesday, Nov. 8 – Indigenous Veterans Day

Indigenous Veterans Day observes the significant past and present contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in service to the Canadian Armed Forces. It is estimated that over 12,000 First Nation People, Métis, Inuit men and women served.

It was not until 1995 that Indigenous veterans were allowed to lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to honour the fallen. Indigenous Veterans Day started in Winnipeg on Nov. 8, 1994, as a way to recognize the importance of Indigenous Veterans, who were not recognized during traditional November 11 ceremonies.

The generous spirit of Indigenous people goes beyond volunteering to serve. While some men and women enlisted in the military, First Nation communities around Canada donated money, food, and materials as well as provided land for airports and defence installations.
